CCTV foils Gibraltar man as he tries to enter British territory at Western Beach frontier fence

CCTV cameras at the western end of Gibraltar’s frontier barrier caught out a local man coming into the territory illegally who said he was only having a drink at a beach bar.

Dylan Otton, 42, of Varyl Begg Estate pleaded guilty to Entering Gibraltar Other Than Through an Immigration Port on Tuesday.

Customs officers first arrived on the scene after the Royal Gibraltar Police Control Room reported that the man had climbed around the fence from Spain onto Western Beach.

The customs officers detained him until police officers arrived at the small beach.

At first he denied the offence, saying he had just stopped at the Western Beach bar for a drink after work.

But he changed his mind after seeing the CCTV camera footage.

Gibraltar’s Magistrates Court fined him £600 for the offence.

The sentence resembles a similar incident on September 5 when two Spanish teenagers climbed around the same fence.

One of them punched a plain clothes police officer in the face and the other ran off.

As the policeman tried to hold down the one who punched him, he bit the officer on the hand.

The other teenager returned to throw rocks and bricks at him.

Finally, the Gibraltar Defence Police arrived to back the officer up and together they arrested the pair.

After pleading guilty to illegal entry to Gibraltar, assault on police and assault to prevent arrest, a court let them go with a conditional discharge.
