A BRITISH man on holiday in Menorca drowned while swimming at Son Bou beach on Monday.
Details of the incident were only revealed on Friday.
The 70-year-old tourist was spending a few days on the island with his wife to celebrate his birthday.
They were staying in Sant Lluis and went to the Alayor area beach on Monday afternoon.
The unnamed man decided to go for a swim in the central area of the beach while his wife stayed on dry land.
Shortly after 5.00pm, a number of people walking on the beach spotted his body floating in the sea and went into the water to rescue him.
Emergency services were called and within a few minutes Alayor Policia Local officers and paramedics arrived at the scene.
The bather had suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and despite intensive efforts for over 40 minutes, he was unable to be revived.
An autopsy was carried out on Tuesday by the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Mao, with the coroner ruling that the British man died from drowning.
No further information has been disclosed.
