FOUR Irish tourists were arrested in Catalunya in the early hours of Monday morning after a bitter dispute with a local taxi driver turned violent.
The group of friends were caught by the Mossos d’Esquadra at Reus Airport near Barcelona just moments before they planned to board a flight back to Ireland.
According to El Caso, the young Irishmen had been staying in the El Raval neighbourhood of Barcelona when they ordered a taxi to take them to the airport, a one hour drive south of the city.
However, when the taxi driver arrived, the group were seen entering an Uber – the group were subsequently confronted by the irate cab driver who insisted that the trip was his since they had booked the ride with him first.
The Irish tourists are then alleged to have attacked the taxi driver after he attempted to prevent them from leaving.
According to reports, the confrontation left the driver with a range of injuries including a torn knee ligament.
The quartet reportedly attempted to flee the scene in their Uber, but Catalan police were able to intercept the group at the airport before they departed on their flight after successfully tracking the car’s registration plate.
