According to police, several other swimmers pulled the man out of the water and onto the shore.

However he had already swallowed a lot of water.

They began CPR and desperately tried to bring him back around, however he was pronounced dead at the scene by arriving emergency services.

It came after a British man on holiday in Menorca drowned while swimming at Son Bou beach on Monday.

Details of the incident were only revealed on Friday.

The 70-year-old tourist was spending a few days on the island with his wife to celebrate his birthday.

They were staying in Sant Lluis and went to the Alayor area beach on Monday afternoon.

The unnamed man decided to go for a swim in the central area of the beach while his wife stayed on dry land.

He is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest before his body was seen floating in the sea by other beachgoers.
