Spain ends compulsory mask wearing for air travel

SPAIN has abolished the need to wear a protective mask on air planes.

The announcement on Thursday from Transport Minister, Raquel Sanchez during a speech in Congress.

On Wednesday, Health Minister, Carolina Darias, said that mask wearing will continue to be mandatory on public transport as well as health facilities and care homes until a new booster vaccination programme is rolled out.

Raquel Sanchez said; “In the case of air transport, given the evolution of the health emergency caused by Covid-19, the royal decree law eliminates the obligation of the guidelines related to the pandemic at airports and establishes that they be recommendations.”

“The obligation to use a mask is ended as well as taking temperatures or maintaining distances in airport queues,” she added.

The European Aviation Safety Agency and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control eliminated mandatory mask-wearing in airports and on board planes in May.

The final decision though was down to individual countries and airlines.

“With this modification we follow in the footsteps of the countries around us to enhance the competitiveness of the transport and tourism sectors,” said Raquel Sanchez.
